If you're a Menomonie-area renter who is concerned about the safety and condition of your rental, a community event, “Safe & Sound: Understanding Rental Inspections,” has been scheduled for you at the Lions Pavilion at Wakanda Park. The event is Wednesday, May 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a free grill-out & fun lawn games.
Dave Kowieski, the City of Menomonie building inspector, will walk participants through how the city's inspection program works, what issues can be reported to his office, and how tenants can take action to ensure safe, healthy living conditions. This is an opportunity to ask questions, connect with other tenants, and gain the knowledge needed to advocate for yourself.
This event has been scheduled as part of the Grassroots Organizing of Western Wisconsin’s “Safe and Healthy Homes” Housing Campaign for Dunn County. Other GROWW events are scheduled this year to improve housing conditions in Menomonie. The group is not associated with any political party.
Last year, GROWW volunteers testified in favor of creating an Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance within the confines of Dunn County. The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the new ordinance, which allows smaller homes to be built on properties in rural areas. Following that, in summer 2024, GROWW conducted a community-wide listening campaign to better understand housing challenges facing residents, how to build trusting relationships, and identify community leaders to solve local challenges in Menomonie.
