Two MHS athletes sign letters of intent for D1 collegiate sports

On Wednesday, November 12th, two Menomonie High School athletes signed letters of intent committing to play sports at the D1 collegiate level next year.

Lauren McCalla will be running cross country and track for the University of Washington Huskies in Seattle. The UW joined the Big Ten Conference in 2024.


McCalla holds ten school records in cross country and track, three Big Rivers Conference records, and one state record. She has been named all BRC nine times and BRC runner of the year four times. With her D1 state cross country title this year, she was named the 2025 state runner of the year. McCalla has also won seven All-American awards and is a Nike Cross Country National Qualifier.


Lauren is the daughter of Karen and Jeff McCalla.

Reese Barfknecht will be playing softball for the Tommies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. St. Thomas is part of the D1 Summit League.


Barfknecht is a two-time varsity letter winner for softball and basketball. In softball, she was named all BRC first team and was an honorable mention for the All-District team. She was a member of the MHS regional champion softball team her junior year and was named WBCA Academic All-State last year.


Reese is the daughter of Chad and Lisa Barfknecht.
