Last week, I shared that the latest episode of the History Channel's Foods that Built America includes the story of Swiss Miss. The episode aired on May 17th and is titled "Chocolate in a Glass". This week, the Wilson Place Mansion shared a link to the episode on YouTube. You can watch it HERE.

The Foster Closet is preparing for the upcoming school year. They are in need of pink erasers, highlighters, black dry-erase markers, Sharpies, pencil sharpeners, and glue sticks.

Do you or someone you know have a beaver dam on your property? Are you curious about how beavers impact the stream and surrounding area? Researchers at UW-Stout are looking for beaver dams near Menomonie that we can incorporate into a research project beginning this summer.

What we’re looking for:

  • Active beaver dams with resident beavers maintaining them

  • Within 30 miles of Menomonie, WI

  • Relatively easy to access from public roads or from private drives that we would be allowed to use

What we’ll be doing:

  • Visiting the site several times over the course of the summer

  • Measuring stream and water characteristics above and below the beaver dam

  • Collecting water samples

  • Possibly deploying acoustic monitors and/or camera traps for a couple 1-week periods (with landowner permission)

What we’re studying:

  • How beavers affect stream characteristics and water quality

  • Impacts of beaver dams on other species, such as trout, bats, and birds

The research will be carried out by undergraduate students under the supervision of a team of professors from UW-Stout. Findings will be shared with participating landowners. We appreciate your help in locating suitable sites for our work!
