New Cancer Support Group starting in Menomonie

After struggling to find a local cancer support group during his own cancer journey, Menomonie resident Bill Harmon is starting one to help others connect with people who understand what they are going through.

Harmon, who has been cancer-free for nearly two years, said he looked for a support group while he was undergoing treatment but couldn’t find one nearby. Although online groups were available, he wanted something more personal.

"When I got the news that I had cancer, I was devastated," Harmon said. "I had great support from my family and friends, and I wanted a place where others going through the same thing could meet in person and tell their story to people who would understand it and feel supported."

The group will meet at the Menomonie Public Library, with the first meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the library's meeting room. The plan is to meet once a month, but Harmon said he'd be willing to meet more often if people want.

Anyone going through cancer treatment, who has been through it, or who is supporting someone with cancer is welcome to attend. The group will provide a welcoming, confidential space where participants can share experiences, listen and learn from one another, offer encouragement, and feel less alone.

Whether you are a cancer survivor, currently in treatment, or a caregiver, the group offers an opportunity to connect with others who understand the challenges of a cancer journey.

All are welcome, and Bill hopes to see you there!

Those interested are encouraged to join the Menomonie Area Cancer Support Group Facebook page.
