Winter Salt Awareness Week | January 26–30
Winter salt plays an important role in keeping roads and sidewalks safe — but once it’s applied, it doesn’t go away. Over time, excess salt can make its way into our lakes, rivers, and drinking water.
Why salt awareness matters:
• Salt can wash into storm drains and flow directly into local waterways
• Chloride from salt does not break down over time
• High chloride levels can harm fish, plants, and water quality
What the City of Menomonie is doing:
• Using salt only where and when it’s most effective
• Applying sand–salt mixes when conditions allow
• Calibrating equipment to avoid over-application
• Training staff on winter maintenance best practices
How you can help at home:
• Shovel early to prevent ice from forming
• Use salt sparingly on sidewalks and driveways
• Sweep up excess salt once the ice melts
Small actions really do add up — helping protect our water while keeping winter travel safer for everyone.
