Governor Evers approves resurfacing, safety improvement project

Updated: May 15

Segment of US 12 in Menomonie to be resurfaced; US 12/WIS 25 North intersection turn lanes to be aligned to improve motorists’ visibility and truck-turning movements

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $1.73 million contract with prime contractor Chippewa Concrete Services, Inc. of Chippewa Falls for a project resurfacing a portion of US 12 between I-94 and WIS 25 North (North Broadway Street) and realigning the intersection of US 12, WIS 25 North and Pine Avenue East in the Dunn County city of Menomonie. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, May 19.

US 12 is showing signs of deterioration, and its intersection with WIS 25 North and Pine Avenue East has a high rate of crashes. To address these, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to:

  • Mill off part of the existing pavement on US 12 and place new asphalt pavement

  • Realign the left-turn lanes on all approaches to the intersection to improve motorists’ visibility

  • Realign the eastbound right-turn lane on US 12 to southbound WIS 25 North to improve the viewing angle for drivers and the southbound right-turn lane on WIS 25 North to US 12 to improve truck-turning movements

  • Install monotube traffic signal equipment at the intersection to increase signal head visibility

  • Construct a raised median along US 12

  • Replace the concrete on US 12 on the west leg of the intersection

  • Mill and overlay Pine Avenue East on the east leg of the intersection

  • Update sidewalk curb ramps

  • Place new pavement markings

  • Replace signage

During construction, most work will be completed using single-lane closures. However, constructing the raised median on US 12 will result in the closure of US 12 from Heller Road to WIS 25 North, which is currently scheduled for July 7 to Aug. 4.

Traffic will be detoured using Oak Avenue and WIS 25 North.

In addition, access will be maintained to properties in the work zone, and accommodations will be made for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late August.
