Gladys A. Rud (Benning)



Gladys Adeline Rud (Benning) of Glenwood City, WI. age 95, quietly passed into the arms of her Savior on May 6th, 2025, at Glenhaven Nursing Home.


Gladys was born Nov 6, 1929, to Alvin & Eva (Yunker) Rud in Osceola, WI. She attended public school through 8th grade. At the age of 50, she received her GED from WITC in New Richmond WI.


Gladys was employed at a sewing factory in St. Paul, MN. She also worked at various retail stores and as a waitress. Her favorite occupation was being a mother and homemaker. Gladys had a passion for playing the piano and accordion. She enjoyed going to dances and teaching her kids to dance. Her sewing and crocheting skills gained her Grand Champion ribbons at the St. Croix County fair. She also excelled in growing flowers and baking. Gladys was also a wiz on Facebook.


In January 1948, she married Donald Benning. They were blessed with four children. Linda, Kathy, Donna and Alvin.


In August 1964, she married Edgar (Bud) Barstad. They were blessed with a son, Michael Barstad.


Gladys is survived by her children. Linda (John) Shepard of Downing, WI, Kathy Benning of N.E. Minneapolis, Donna (Tom) Winkler of Menomonie, WI, Alvin (Jill) Benning of Eau Claire, WI, and Michael (Kristin) Barstad of Glenwood City, WI, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by Sister Rosie Rud of St. Croix Falls, WI, brother Merlin (Marilyn) Rud of River Falls, WI, several nieces and nephews.


Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Eva Rud, brother Edward Sonny Rud, his wife Irene, and sisters Betty Sahnow and husband Merrill, Viola Harer, Marlene Wahl and husband Orville. She is further preceded by grandsons, Sean Shepard and Trevor Benning, and nephew Dennis Rud.


Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00p.m. on Thursday, May 15th, 2025, at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, WI. The celebration of Life Service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Chaplain Richard Roger officiating.


Her family would like to thank the staff at Glenhaven and Adoray for the excellent and loving care given to her.
