Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) and the Wisconsin State Senate are proud to offer a high school junior or senior in the 31st Senate District a unique opportunity to experience state government firsthand through the 2027 Senate Scholar Program.

The Senate Scholar Program is a unique, week-long educational experience in Madison for Wisconsin's top students around the state. One student is selected from each of the state's 33 Senate districts to participate.

"This program gives students a real, hands-on look at how our government works — not just from a textbook, but from the Senate floor itself," said Sen. Smith. "I encourage students in our district to apply for this incredible opportunity. It’s also a great way to get your foot in the door for potential career opportunities in the legislature or state government."

Scholars take part in an advanced government curriculum built around classroom instruction, roundtable discussions and a hands-on legislative lab. During the first part of the week, experts teach Scholars about constituent relations, legislative research and development, and even bill drafting. Scholars also get to participate in roundtable discussions with legislative support agency directors and staff, members of the media and advocates gaining insight into every facet of the legislative process.

In the second half of the week, Scholars put that knowledge into practice. They staff the Senate floor during an actual Senate floor session, witness Senate debate firsthand and draft their own bills and amendments. Scholars form a mock committee, elect their own leadership, and cap off the week with a Friday committee hearing that includes testimony from members of the public. Evening activities round out the experience alongside the rigorous daytime schedule.

Each Senate Scholar stays at the Concourse Hotel in downtown Madison, where the program director is available 24 hours a day throughout the week.

Applications for the 2027 Senate Scholar Program must be received by November 6, 2026. A digital application and additional program information are available at www.senatescholar.com.
