Philosophers' Cafe: Distinguishing Military from Law Enforcement - October 14th

The next Philosophers' Cafe will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 7 pm at Brewery Nønic. The topic will be Distinguishing Military from Law Enforcement: Considerations and Implications, with moderator Col. Chris Engen, Special Assistant to the Provost, UW-Stout Polytechnic.

Evolving national and community-level security and public safety concerns, the increased use of military equipment and uniforms by law enforcement personnel, and the inclusion of some military capabilities in domestic security missions may challenge the ability to readily distinguish between these two institutions, their traditional roles, and differing purposes. What are the potential implications upon the organizations and their personnel, communities, and public perceptions?  We will explore the legal, operational, and cultural considerations.

Philosophers’ Cafés are public forums held at local pubs and coffee shops where community members engage in open, friendly, and respectful dialogue in a relaxed, informal setting. Meetings are led by faculty from UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire, with topics ranging from traditional philosophical problems to pressing contemporary ethical issues.

Everyone is welcome to attend. A diversity of views and approaches is encouraged, and no formal training in philosophy (or anything else) is required – just an interest in good questions and good conversation.
