The Mabel Tainter Theater is continuing its monthly movie series, offering a variety of classic films on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Mabel’s Movie Series, which first started last summer with showings of Mamma Mia!Grease, and Jurassic Park, was created to help make the Mabel feel more accessible to the community by offering showings of popular films at an affordable price.

“We want the Mabel to be a place where the community can come together,” Lucas Chase, executive director of the Mabel Tainter, explained, “and to provide different opportunities to spend time here that are more reasonably priced.”

Chase added that the event offers a more comfortable way to experience the theater.

“A lot of people may think of the Mabel as stuffy or fancy, but it’s not,” he said. “You don’t really have to dress up — it can be very casual. The movie nights offer that experience.”

The events give movie lovers the chance to go all out and immerse themselves in the experience, with some regular attendees even taking the opportunity to dress up in costume.

At the March movie night — a showing of the 1990 film Misery — local moviegoer Lori Smith dressed as Annie Wilkes, Kathy Bates’ legendary character in the horror classic, complete with a prop mallet in hand. She and friend Kris Winter have attended nearly every movie night at the Mabel in costume.

“We’ve gone to and dressed up at just about every movie,” said Smith. The month before, they put on their Stormy Kromers for the February showing of Grumpy Old Men. “It’s a simple way to support the Mabel Tainter, “Winter added. “Even those movies you see over and over again, it’s so fun to share it with other people.”

Tickets are $6 for students and $10 for adults, and can be purchased online or at the Mabel Tainter box office. Movies begin at 7 p.m., with freshly made popcorn available for purchase and the option to grab a drink at the Spirit Room beforehand.
