Effort to bring an elevator to the Colfax Municipal Building receives $40,000 boost

A Colfax alumnus has pledged to match the first $40,000 raised in this year’s effort to bring an elevator and other improvements to the Colfax Municipal Building.

“The chance to double people’s donations and get this project started is exciting. We’ve been dreaming of an elevator here for so long,” said Lisa Bragg-Hurlburt, Director of Colfax Public Library.

The Colfax Municipal Building has been home to Colfax Public Library since 1917. The 3-story landmark on Colfax’s Main Street was built with locally quarried sandstone and has state and national Historic status.

“Our goal with the elevator is to keep the historic charm and downtown location, but increase the accessibility and usable space in the building,” Bragg-Hurlburt notes.

Fundraising efforts started in 2018, and over $170,000 has been raised; $700,000 is needed.

“We hope by spreading the word about these $40,000 matching funds, more people will join us in trying to make this happen. Maybe people from Eau Claire or Menomonie who have passed through Colfax and wondered about the building will take an interest. There aren’t many buildings like this left anymore, and it’s rare when they still serve their original use. Plus, we are happy to give tours and talk about the building.”
