Darrel E. Nelson, age 95 of Knapp, WI passed away Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Menomonie, WI surrounded by his family.
He was born on November 11, 1929 in Knapp, WI to Lawrence Nelson and Agnes (Ford) Nelson. He grew up in the Knapp area and attended Knapp Grade School. He graduated from Menomonie High School.
He served in the army for two years and was stationed in Germany. He was employed with the Dunn County Highway Department for 43 years until his retirement in 1990.
Darrel married Phyllis Gordon, April 12, 1956 in Menomonie. Together they lived in Knapp and raised their three children.
Darrel loved being around his family and friends. He was a caring and loving dad, grandpa, and great grandpa.
He was a man of the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting deer and pheasant alongside many special friends and family. He also enjoyed cards and was an avid bowler making the Hall of Fame Board. While he enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, he was a loyal fan of the Brewers.
Darrel is survived by his three children, Kathy (Jeff) Stanton, Julie (Robert) Lee, and Danny Nelson; former daughter-in-law Debbie Nelson. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Adam (Lindsay), Lucas, Cody, Jordan, Trenton (Becky), Afton (Michael), Nathan, Matthew (Danielle), Christina (Ryan), and Danielle; 12 great grandchildren: Sloan, Harlo, Cadence, Carter, Casen, Camden, Logan, Benson, Walker, Aria, Willa, and Hayden; brother-in-law LaVerne Gordon; as well as many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by wife Phyllis (Gordon) of 61 years, his parents Lawrence and Agnes, his maternal parents George and Adeline Gordon, and sister-in-law Alice Ann Gordon.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, WI. with Rev. Tracy Kennedy officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday August 17, 2025 at Olson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in the Town of Stanton, Dunn County, Wisconsin with military honors performed by Menomonie Veterans Honor Guard.
