Michael Richard Burnett, age 66, of Boyceville, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, April 12th.

Michael was born on February 15th, 1960, in Menomonie, WI, to Ann Burnett (Gudis). He was the second of three children.

On August 25th, 1979, Mike married the absolute love of his life, Debra Rae Huls. Together they built a beautiful life and raised their three children, Nichole, Travis, and Sheanah—creating a family rooted in love, humor, and resilience.

Mike lived life to the fullest from the very beginning. If his journey could be described as a road, it would be a winding dirt path filled with oversized gravel and steep climbs—challenging at times, but always navigated with grit, humor, and a fearless spirit. No matter the obstacles he faced, he kept his head held high and his laughter close at hand.

His hobbies were as bold and lively as he was. Hunting was a sacred annual tradition—a self-declared holiday—shared with his loyal hunting crew. Mike made every season an adventure, often choosing the biggest and steepest hills to climb, much to the dismay and amusement of his friends.

Mike also found joy in his pool leagues. Watching him behind a pool table was something special. He loved challenging unsuspecting opponents, pretending to be rusty until—once money hit the table—he revealed his true skill. The priceless transformation from their confident smirks to pure shock never stopped being entertaining.

Coaching youth sports was another of Mike’s passions. He coached wrestling, basketball, and softball, pouring heart and determination into every team he led. One of his proudest accomplishments was taking a group of kids from Knapp—an underdog team reminiscent of the “Bad News Bears”—and guiding them to a championship victory. The pride he carried after that win lasted for weeks.

Mike had an enormous heart and a natural ability to see and support those who needed it most. He became a father figure to many kids over the years, offering guidance, safety, and unconditional acceptance. His home was always open, and his annual Fourth of July fireworks shows were a beloved tradition.

Some of Mike’s happiest times were spent camping at the Downsville bottoms with his friends and family, lounging in trifold chairs, soaking up the sun, and relaxing in the river with a cold drink in hand. These weekends created memories that his loved ones will cherish forever.

Throughout his working years, Mike spent most of his career at Ideal Door. Countless coworkers have shared that he was the best supervisor they ever had. He had a special way of turning even the hardest days into something manageable—sometimes even enjoyable—using his trademark humor and leadership.

Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Preston; brothers-in-law Paul and Bryan; his nephew Jay; and his loving grandparents.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Debra; his children Nichole (John) Beal, Travis Burnett (Joanna), and Sheanah (Brad) Voeltz; his mother Ann (Dan) Gudis; his sisters Kim Zegler and Aimee (Lyndsey) Gudis; and his cherished grandchildren Allison, Brandon, Mason, Jackson, Evelyn, Ayla, Macie, and Bradley. He is also survived by many extended family members and close friends who held a special place in his heart.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

Rhiel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Menomonie, is serving the family.
