The Menomonie Police Department shared the following on their Facebook page:

On September 10, 2022, Officer Garrett Hackl was awarded the Menomonie Police Department's Life Saving Award for his heroic actions on May 1, 2022. In the evening hours of May 1, 2022, Officer Hackl was dispatched to look for an emotionally distraught person that made suicidal statements. Officer Hackl located the person on the HWY 29 bridge overlooking the Red Cedar River. When the person saw Officer Hackl, the individual tried to climb over the guardrail to jump in the cold river. Officer Hackl quickly took hold of the person and prevented the suicide attempt. The individual was then taken to a hospital to receive medical help for his suicidal thoughts/actions. Officer Hackl was assisted by the Dunn County Sheriff's Office and the UW-Stout Police Department. Thank you, Officer Hackl, for safeguarding the lives of people in our community.
