The Menomonie Police Department has shared the following information.
Catalytic Converter theft has been on the rise both locally and nationally in recent months, and we've received two recent reports of catalytic converter thefts in the city.
Why is this?
Catalytic converters are made of precious metals and are easily removed from a vehicle by cutting them off, which makes them a high-value target for thieves. Hybrid vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius, may be of particular interest to converter thieves.
Additionally, thieves may target taller vehicles like trucks or SUV’s because the higher ground clearance allows for easier access underneath the vehicle.
Park in a well-lit area, close to building entrances or security cameras when possible.
