Major portion of Highway B in Dunn County expected to reopen shortly

A highly traveled section of County Highway B in Dunn County is expected to be reopened shortly as a complex Dunn County highway project is progressing well, county highway officials said.

Dustin Binder, county Highway Commissioner, said the portion of Highway B north of the Badger Drive intersection could be open in two to three weeks. The opening depends on the traffic being able to safely crossover to the northbound lanes at the Union Pacific railroad crossing during the staging process.

“They are looking at paving south of the (Union Pacific) railroad tracks next week to help reduce possible congestion at the Badger Drive intersection,” Binder said.

The Highway B project is two separate projects: from state Highways 12/29 to I-94 and from I-94 to Packer Drive. The estimated cost of the combined project is more than $10 million, with state and federal funds picking up the bulk of the expense.

“This is one of the most significant projects we have had in Dunn County in quite a while,” Binder said. About 4,500 vehicles use County Highway B daily.

The county had opened the portion of Highway B north of the railroad tracks but had to close that portion to traffic again after significant traffic problems surfaced. The amount of traffic made it hard for trucks and other vehicles to turn at the intersection with Badger Drive, Binder said.

“We had semis trying to turn in very tight situations, and one damaged one of the railroad signals, so we elected to shut that portion down until we can resolve some traffic issues,” Binder said.

The Badger and Packer drives intersections remain open.

“In two, maybe three, weeks hopefully we can open that road up again,” Binder said, adding that drivers have been very cooperative through this construction period.

“We’ve had very positive response from individuals who have traveled through there,” he said.

Work is progressing well on the portion of the County Highway B project south of Interstate-94, Binder said.   Concrete pavement will be laid shortly on the northbound lanes and is tentatively scheduled to be completed in July. he added.

Work on both projects is anticipated to last throughout the summer, with final completion this fall.
