Life Saving Award Given to Dunn County Sheriff's Deputy

From the Dunn County Sheriff's Office Facebook page:

Today Deputy Gates received our Life Saving Award for his actions during a crash on November 22, 2021.

Deputy Gates arrived on scene and observed a large amount of heavy, black smoke coming from the engine compartment of the occupied vehicle.

In the driver seat, a male subject, with blood on his face, screaming indicating his legs were stuck under the dash. Without hesitation Deputy Gates was able to free the man's legs and pull him from the vehicle and took him to safety, with the assistance of Sergeant Rud.

Deputy Gates returned to the vehicle in search of the passenger. Deputy Gates utilized his fire extinguisher to fight back the fire and observed an unresponsive female in the passenger seat, slumped over the center console. Deputy Gates along with Sgt. Rud, pulled the female from the vehicle to safety, to be cared for by EMS on scene.

Seconds later the passenger compartment of the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Without the quick and selfless actions of Deputy Gates, the outcome of this crash would have been deadly.

Congratulations and Thank You Deputy Gates from all of us at the Sheriff’s Office.

We hope the occupants of the vehicle are recovering well.
