In November, Krystal and Nick Mechtel of Menomonie received news that no parent wants to hear. Their seven year old son Lincoln, a second grader at River Heights Elementary, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Lincoln underwent surgery and is facing at least six months of chemotherapy. For each five day chemo treatment - which is needed about every three weeks - the family must travel to Rochester, MN. In addition, Lincoln’s blood needs to be tested weekly, which means another trip to Rochester, not to mention unscheduled trips if Lincoln is experiencing any signs of illness.
The Mechtel family moved to Menomonie three years ago with Lincoln and their 3 other children to be closer to family. Nick, an Army veteran, served multiple tours overseas as a medic and retired in 2014 as 100% combat disabled due to an injury he suffered while serving.
A GoFundMe has been started to help the family with medical expenses and the added expense of travel and meals. Krystal is not working at this time so she can devote herself to Lincoln’s care and her husband and other children.
“Thankfully at this time Lincoln is in good spirits,” Krystal said. “We appreciate the support we’ve received from family, friends and the community. Every little bit helps.”
